Higgins meeting win, Morton's title...

John 'Jon' Higgins won the weekend overall with two wins and a second place - enough to earn the former champion third place in his comeback season. Peter Morton went head to head with Chris Grieve for the title and it was pretty much decided in Saturday's heat when Grieve suffered a broken half shaft when Morton was well on his way to victory.

That result left Morton with the task of collecting just 30 points from his remaining two races. Grieve was quick in his next heat but second place to Higgins meant that he had dropped another 15 points so a race finish was all that Morton needed in his season heat to secure the title. After an initial scare when Ali Topley collided with him at Yentwood corner Morton drove a steady race to finish sixth and claim the title.

There was controversy in the final as Morton ignored a black flag early on in the race. With all pressure off though the race was a thriller and once again it was Higgins who came through for the win although he had to work hard thanks to some typically gutsy drives from Derek Pierce, Dave Newsham, Morton, Grieve and Jamie Clarke who all had time at the front.
