Clarke's
win, Grieve's title, Ward is top Rookie...
Superb
racing once again with the added spice and tension added as
the final championship placings were up for grabs. Lawrence
Davey's mathematical championship chance disappeared when
he went off in the early stages of the first race although
he rejoined down the order. Dave Newsham stormed away from
the front row whilst the other contenders fought their way
through the pack. Jamie Clarke had made a lightning start
from row four and was up into second at the end of the first
lap although Dave was nearly three seconds ahead. Jamie reeled
in the 50 car over the next five laps and went past on the
last lap to cut the points gap between Dave an himself from
40 to 25 points. Steve Thompson also had a good drive from
the 5th row to third whilst Chris Grieve was taking now chances
posting a workman like 7th place to keep his championship
lead at over 300 points.
With
Chris on the front row for the second race few would have
bet against him taking the win at the title at the same time
although a top seven finish was all he needed. As predicted
he shot into the lead but had the now consistent front running
Simon Belcher all over him. The pair raced hard with Belcher
taking the lead on lap three before Grieve moved to the front
once again on lap five. The Clarke, Newsham battle caught
and passed Belcher too before the final stages with Jamie
again beating Dave to narrow the gap to just 10 points for
the last race. Grieve's win was a fitting way to secure the
title and end his season - the Hexham youngster electing not
to compete in the last race to save his car for the World
Championships at Sears Point in November instead.
Chris
and team were watching the final race at the Mountain and
saw another enthralling race unfold. Lawrence Davey's difficult
day seemed to be on the turn as he led in the early stages
from Lee Fitzpatrick and Simon Belcher. Simon eventually took
second on lap four whilst further back Jamie Clarke had passed
Dave Newsham and was climbing up the order. Jamie went off
the circuit at the top of the Mountain as he and Derek Pierce
had the same idea at the same time. Jamie rejoined a way down
the order in eleventh but was far from finished as he started
to carve his way through the pack once again. DaVew Newsham
was into third by lap four and cutting the lead held by Belcher
and Fitzptrick - the pair not doing themselves any favours
by battling with each other for the lead. Lee was the first
victim of pressure from Dave on the penultimate lap - the
number two car going into the back of Simon Belcher and then
going off and dropping back. Simon too lost out on the last
lap, not just to Newsham as Clarke went through as well having
recovered superbly. If he could pass Newsham in the race then
he would also pass him in the final table as well - it wasn't
to be as Dave held on superbly to soak up the pressure, take
the win and with it the runner up slot in the 2006 Legends
Cars championship.
Dave
Ward had already secured the 2006 Rookie Championship at Brands
but second place in the newcomers table was still up for grabs.
Darren Gaulton secured that place in the second heat.
