| Former champion Paul Hughes will make a guest appearance at Brands Hatch on Sunday 31st July. The 1997 and 1998 Champion will race off the back of the grid in car 85 as Iain Holden is not able to take part on the second day of the double header. Paul is treating the meeting as a one-off at present. He said "Since racing Legends I've competed in MGs and Clios. At the moment I'm back on 'bikes but Legends have always been a very special part of my CV. My young son was too young to remember my two seasons in Legends so it will be nice for him to see the racing as well. I love Brands Hatch and I'm looking forward to racing in Legends again - Obviously the cars will have changed in the years since I raced but I'll give it a good shot!" Paul is still one of the most successful drivers the UK formula has seen - he won 30 races from his 81 starts and has a better career race/points average than all the current top drivers. | |

| Legends Cars invited to French Grand Prix |

| Legends Cars have been invited to take part in the forthcoming French Grand Prix race programme at Magny-Cours on 1st, 2nd and 3rd July. 40 cars from across Europe will race at the event with practice on Friday morning followed by the first race during the afternoon. The cars will then contest a second race on Saturday. Legends Cars growth in Europe is almost as fast as the cars themselves. A French series was started last year and is being run by former Super Touring Champion Jean-Phillippe Dayraut. This season has also seen the formula starting in Belgium and Spain, with further competitions due to start shortly in both Germany and Portugal. “It’s fantastic to receive this invitation,” says 600 Racing Europe’s Phil Cooper. “It just goes to show how much respect the organisers of the Grand Prix have for Legends Cars as both a serious competition and as an entertaining concept. It’s still early days for the formula in France too. We’ve come a long way in a very short space of time.” “This year’s UK entry alone underlines just how serious Legends Cars racing is being taken. Let’s face it, it’s economically tough out there and yet we’ve got full grids and the most talent rich entry we’ve ever had with champions from all fields of motor racing. It must be one of the competitive formulae in Europe and certainly the most cost effective given the level of competition.” Legends Cars are the only UK National motor racing formula to contest a genuine World Championship each year, the event is contested in the USA at Infineon Raceway, (nee Sears Point) each November. The UK Championship is contested over 14 rounds at leading circuits in England, Scotland and Wales. | |

| 15/05/2005 |
|
The Legends Cars 2005 Championship moves to Mallory Park on Sunday 22nd May for round four of this year's competition. In either club circuit or oval guise, Mallory is the fastest circuit on the Legends calendar and always a popular venue having seen 23 different drivers take the chequered flag, 11 of them being first time Legends race winners. This year's championship is headed by 21 year old ex Karter Chris Grieve (a newcomer to the National Championship this season) by just five points from Legends veteran Peter Morton. Jamie Clarke is third just ahead of Lawrence Davey. In total 75 Legends races have been run at Mallory Park with five of the current crop having taken wins there - Peter Morton (6), John Jon Higgins (5), Steve Thompson (4), Oli Poyser (3) and Ian Sturt (2). As usual consistency will be the key to the meeting and that may well play in to Morton's hands - the Yorkshireman has taken four outright victories at Mallory to Higgins's two and Poyser's one. Stephen Treherne has now retired from Legends but his lap record around the club circuit (which we are using on 22nd) was set on 28th September 2003 at 54.707 seconds (88.83mph). Round four's entry (29 cars) will see a little piece of Legends history written as our new five race format will be invoked for the first time. The circuit is licensed for 28 Legends Cars and so the complete field will be split into three for the heats. The bottom 15 drivers in the day's points after the heats will then have to contest a 'pre-final' to determine which 14 will join the top 14 for the 'A Final'. This format maintains our commitment to providing value for money for our drivers and ensuring that everyone gets at least three races.

James and his family made a big impression on Legends Cars in a very short time. His only season in Legends Cars netted him second place in the rookie trophy behind Craig Percy. He scored several top ten finishes and impressively had only two retirements from 42 starts. We would like to extend our sincere condolences to his family and friends at this sad time.

| Chris Grieve became the third different overall winner in three rounds of the 2005 Legends Cars championship at Rockingham over the weekend. Third, fourth and fifth places secured the youngster from Hexham his first outright national championship round victory. The heats got underway on Saturday with Dave Newsham winning the first race from Steve Thompson. The second race saw a win for Jamie Clarke with Peter Morton in second. The third heat saw Morton go one better with a win from Dave Moore who again equalled his career best second place. The final saw mayhem on the run down to the hairpin as Derek Pierce, John 'Jon' Higgins and Oli Poyser clashed in a shower of sparks against the concrete wall. On the restart Newsham was flying and hurtled off on his own whilst a spectacular battle was fought out for second place. Jamie Clarke came through as runner up with Paul Thompson having the race of his life to take third after a race long fight with Jim Clark, Chris Grieve and Marc Lord. This was classic Legends action with cars swapping positions throught and each place won was very hard earned. The day's overall points were as follows: 1st Chris Grieve (480), 2nd Jamie Clarke (465), 3rd Dave Newsham (410), 4th= Peter Morton, Ian Sturt, Lawrence Davey (390). The unofficial points totals now read: 1st Grieve (1,390), 2nd Morton (1,385), 3rd Clark (1,340), 4th Davey (1,300), 5th Poyser (1,175), 6th Pierce (1,140). | |

| The National Championship Legends Cars grid will be boosted by two more names as the Grindrod brothers switch from the short oval formula next month. Nic Grindrod is well known as a star in Pickup Truck racing. He won six races in his debut season (2002) and was previously a class champion in Westfields. His short oval titles include the National Grand Prix Midgets championship and the European Legends crown. Nic’s Younger brother Richard has also been carving out a name for himself on the small ovals first in Ministox where he was national points champion and more recently in Legends. The lads' father Karl Grindrod explained that the pair will contest as many rounds as possible but Nic's Pickup Truck racing campaign will take preference and therefore only Richard will be racing in the Legends at Rockingham and Mallory (where the Trucks are also on the bill) but Nic will join in where there's no clash in his commitments. The Birmingham based pair will be entered under the Viking Rover/Vauxhall banner and take the total number of National Championship registrations past the 30 mark for the 2005 season. | |

The new race format with three heats, each including two thirds of the field, proved a big success with Chris Grieve winning the opener whilst defending champion Oli Poyser won the second. Heat three saw Lawrence Davey take his fifth career win (and his first National win). Morton took the day's overall win by jut five points from Jamie Clarke who in turn was five clear of Chris Grieve. | Oulton Park Preview |
Back to Top |
| 31/03/2005 |
|
Legends Cars are about to commence their tenth season of racing here in the UK at Oulton Park on Saturday 9th April. This is our 8th time at the Cheshire circuit and the second season on the trot that the year’s opening round has been held here. Legends racing sees a few subtle changes this season – the first being a new format which has been devised to accommodate more registrations. Briefly the changes mean that there will be more Legends action as there will be at least four races per meeting (three heats each with two thirds of the entry and then the finals). We welcome two newcomers to Legends at Oulton Park – the first is Iain Holden who lives in Lancashire and is joining the Firth Steels Motorsport team. Next up is former MG Owners Club Champion Nick Evans (Herts). Several other drivers are graduating from the Scottish Championship into the UK National competition. Leading these entries is reigning Scottish Champion Derek Pierce (East Kilbride). Next up is Dave Newsham (Inverness) who was the top scorer at our Winter weekend last season and also won the final in our last National round in 2005. Hexham’s Chris Grieve is the current Knockhill lap record holder and a multiple race winner. Malcolm Clark (Newcastle) has two race wins to his credit whilst his nephew Dan has several podium finishes to his. Also making the move into the National Championship is Inverness based racer Jeff Stewart. Several drivers on the entry list have already enjoyed success at Oulton and could perhaps be touted as favourites for early season honours. Previous race winners include – Ian Sturt (Ashtead) won the first ever Legends race at Oulton on 7th August 1999 – his second career win. Derek Pierce meanwhile won the opening race of last season. Peter Morton (Cleckheaton) and last year’s champ Oli Poyser (Gloucester) have won twice there, the latter winning his on his 100th Legends start last season, the former also having recorded three fastest laps. The most prolific Oulton race winner of the current crop however is the returning ex double champion John ‘Jon’ Higgins (Chester) who has won three races there (and three fastest laps). Both Peter and John were overall round winners on their last visits to the circuit with John holding the Island circuit lap record at 1.41.676 (83.63mph). At the time of writing around thirty entries are expected for the opening round with the third heat on the day also being the 400th National Legends race held in the UK.

|
| Former MG Owners Club champion Nick Evans is making the switch to Legends Cars in 2005. Evans, 43 from Hemel Hempstead, has been eyeing up the competition for some time and it was a Legends test drive last September that finally saw him decide to make the move. “The car was awesome to drive,” says Nick. “I knew after just a couple of corners that I wanted to race one. There’s so much that’s ‘right’ about the Legends formula – balloted grids mean I’m going to have to do some overtaking and everyone that’s seen the car thinks it’s superb.” Evans started racing in Gearbox karts over a decade ago but took a sabbatical to set up his own business. He then joined the BARC MG Owners Club Championship racing a Maestro. He won the newcomers trophy in 1996 and was outright Champion in 2001. Nick also won the class championship in 2002, his first season racing an MG F. | |

| The British Team have retained the Legends Cars World Cup |
| The four car UK team have retained the Legends Cars World Cup, the Transatlantic Trophy, in last weekend's World Championship racing at Sears Point in the United States. The Pro class saw the UK pairing of National champion Oli Poyser and Jamie Clarke in action. Oli ran as high as second but lost out in a battle with former World Champion Mike Samis to drop back to sixth. Jamie had qualified in second place on the front row of the grid but was taken off on the first lap demoting him to the back of the field. Despite this put in a real charge and came through the field to take third place behind American pairing Scott and George Sheldon. The Masters division saw Peter Morton take a win in the heats and he lined up on the second row of the grid for the final. With three laps to go he was running second behind American ace Bobby Christensen when he was hit by Robert Gayton going into a corner and fired out of the race. Jim Clarke had a dismal time in the heats with engine problems and he qualified 22nd (out of nearly 50 entrants in this division). He drove superbly well to finish fourth, Christensen taking the win. With three of the Brits taking top six positions the team had done enough to retain the Translatlantic Trophy. Poyser's sixth place earned him enough points to be crowned World Champion in the season long points championship. | |

| This year's British Challenge is heading to Sears Point for the 2004 World Championships |
| A team of four British drivers are heading to America to contest next weekend's World Legends Cars championships at Sears Point (12th & 13th November). Heading the team is UK Champion Oli Poyser, the 24 year old from Gloucester who is aiming to follow in the wheeltracks of last year's winner John 'Jon' Higgins and previous UK winners Tick Steward and John Mickel. "There's no other motor racing in this country where you can go and take on the best in the world. It's a fantastic opportunity," says Poyser. "The disadvantage for us is that the circuit is very long and technical and the Americans get to race there at least two or three times a year. I've only raced there once before but the Racetec boys (Oli's team) have been there several years so that will help." Despite a perceived disadvantage, the British team usually fare well and Poyser himself finished 5th in the event last season. Joining Poyser will be Legends stalwart Peter Morton (Cleckheaton) who has just completed his 7th season in the formula in second place and who seems as keen as ever. In addition to committing to the World final, Morton has just announced that he will expand his GM/Firth Steels team next year to run a second car and he is currently in negotiations with several drivers who have expressed an interest in racing with him in 2005. The UK team is completed by Jamie Clarke (Formby) who finished third in the UK Championship this year, his first season in the competition. Clarke also competed at Sears Point last season, as Scottish Champion, and finished one place ahead of Poyser in 4th. Jamie's father, Jim completes the two car 'Clarke Engery/Kanco Motorsport' team and the four man UK squad. | |

Simon Belcher, who is the current Semi Pro World number two and was 6th in this year's UK championship, tells us that "John 'Jon' Higgins will be back in a Legend at Rockingham, I cannot make it on the Saturday so I will be entering my car as a team car with JJ driving on Saturday and me driving on Sunday I offered him the Legend for both days and I would race his Days of Thunder car for him but he has declined that part of the deal."

Unless Ron Dennis comes back with a substantially increased deal, it looks likely that Glenn Burtenshaw (72) will take part in a 2nd full year with the Legends. "The battle for 18th in the championship has been extraordinary this year" explained Glenn "I'm sure it's had the whole motorsport community enthralled!, finishing 17th has always been my dream and maybe next year I can turn that dream into a reality". Despite constant media speculation it seems Robin Webb (24) is likely to turn down the opportunity to run a car in the "2005 Butlins Bumper Car Championship (Bognor division)" for another year, and will instead "take things a little easy" and win the Corgi Legends Championship instead. Lance Gauld is OK after a nasty 'off' in the second race in the SMRC meeting at Knockhill on Sunday. He posted this message on the Scottish Racing Forum: "Thanks for your concern folks, im ok took a big hit and was winded with a very sore neck so they took precautions and extracted me from the car, just home from hospital with painkillers and instructions to take it easy, but otherwise A-OK. | The 2004 Legends Cars championship opens at Oulton Park on Easter Monday with a full grid. Even though the opening round still some three weeks away, enties to the Bank Holiday event have closed as the 26 car limit for the Fosters circuit has been reached. "The event is actually oversubscribed," said Legends boss Phil Cooper. "A 27th entry was received this morning and there were several other drivers hoping to race as well. We could easily have had more than thirty entries but the limit on the Fosters circuit is 26." The new season is the ninth of Legends Cars racing in this country and the format of balloted grids for the heats and the reversed grid for the final is proving more popular than ever. |

| Legends Cars are expanding into mainland Europe with the setting up of a competition in France. The deal, which was agreed earlier this month, will see a French Championship contested this season 2004. Negotiations are currently well underway with the country’s organising body, FFSR, to gain homologation for the cars prior to the commencement of the championship. Heading up things across the channel is 2001 French Super Touring Car Champion and Andros Trophy ice racer Jean-Philippe Dayraut. The 34 year old runs a circuit in his home town of Toulouse. 600 Racing Europe boss Phil Cooper set up the first test session in France at Nogaro with Dayraut in January, both men pronouncing it a huge success. Leading UK Championship runner Robin Drysdale was also on hand to offer advice on set up and handling of the 1,200cc Yamaha powered cars. Not content with racing on home soil, Dayraut is also investigating a parallel campaign in the Corgi backed UK Championship subject to date clashes. In addition to the French Championship which will begin at the end of April, plans are being made for an Anglo-French Legends Challenge to be held at Bercy. The leading French drivers will also be invited to join the European team in the annual World Championships in America in November. Further expansion in Europe is also likely as contacts have been established in both Italy and Spain. |

John ‘Jon’ Higgins and Steve Hobday (right) are set to move on from Legends Cars, when a new ASCAR race team, Renegade Racing, run a pair of Chevrolet Monte Carlo V8 machines in the 2004 Days of Thunder championship. Higgins, who is the reigning World and UK Legends Cars champion is looking forward to his first experience on the 1.5 mile high-speed oval at Rockingham. ”This is a fantastic opportunity for myself and Steve,” he said . “We both did our rookie test last year and we have driven the two-seater at some of the events in 2003. Now, we are really looking forward to going racing next season in Britain’s biggest racing series.” Steve Hobday, will his have his first experience of racing on an oval in 2004. The 40-year-old Lancastrian was a multiple motocross champion before switching to cars in 2000, running in the Northwest Formula Ford Championship and then the Legends series, where this year, he finished runner-up in the championship to his new team-mate. “I’ve always been a bit of a NASCAR nut and just loved that type of racing, this is going to be a dream come true, it’s always been something I’ve wanted to do” said Steve. “In the past, racing like this meant going to the USA and it was always something that was out of reach. Now thanks to Rockingham, there’s even a chance that at the end of next season, we could even dream of following other Days of Thunder drivers like Derek Hayes and Michael Vergers and doing just that. Next year’s going to be awesome!” Awesome is also a word that can be applied to next season's Legends Cars championship. The provisional entry list for the 2004 championship already has some 28 cars with at least three newcomers, several top names returning to sort out unfinished business plus of course the series' established stars. |

| John 'Jon' Higgins is the new Legends Cars World Champion |
John Higgins and Derek Pierce have won their respective 2003 Legends Cars World Championship titles at Infineon Raceway, Sears Point near San Francisco. In the Pro category John Higgins put last year's disappointment of a last lap retirement behind him to steer his stars and stripes liveried car home to take the win. Higgins becomes the first UK driver win consecutive National championships and the World title. With Aly Hunter unable to compete due to injury, Ross Mickel stepped in as a last minute substitute and took a superb second place to Higgins. Scottish Champion Jamie Clarke was fourth with Englishman Oli Poyser, making his debut in the World finals, in fifth. It proved to be a frustrating weekend for UK Championship runner up Steve Hobday whose engine broke cam when battling for fourth position. The Semi pro category saw another UK win. Derek Pierce, who finished third in the Scottish Championship in his first season, stormed to victory ahead of ex European Jet-ski champion Simon Belcher. Welshman James Wantling also finished an impressive 8th. The Americans salvaged some consolation by winning the Masters title, Robert Gayton successfully defending his crown, although Peter Morton had been challenging for the lead but suffered a broken half shaft. Double Scottish champion Colin Noble came through for second place with Jim Clarke in fifth. With such a strong international contingent racing, this year saw the introduction of a Transatlantic Team Challenge Cup. The UK team were again convincing winners of this competition, all twelve UK drivers playing their part throughout the weekend. |

| Davey's double, new man Jenkins wins final... |

| Lawrence Davey won the second day of the Legends Winter Weekend |
| Lawrence Davey celebrated his 19th birthday a day late with two race wins and a second place to win Sunday's Corgi Legends Winter weekend competition. Davey had to work hard for both his wins - starting eighth on the grid in the first race and leading from lap two after deposing Daren Hills. In the second race he was a little further forward on the grid but was straight in front at the first corner and never looked back. The final was another matter with Davey starting down in 12th place. Lance Gauld fired himself from fifth to first at the start with Dan Heron following through. Heron took the lead on lap four but Davey dislodged him coming from third place a lap back. While this was going on at the front no one had noticed seventeen year old Welshman Owen Jenkins carving his way through the field from 18th place on the grid. The Legends rookie had performed well in the heats but nobody expected the 82 car to make such good progress. He was eleventh after the first lap and fifth by lap two but had more trouble dealing with the battling duo of Ian Sturt and Daren Hills. Eventually he did however and was third by the end of lap five and then nipped past Heron on the penultimate lap. Dabey led by a couple of lengths but the Welshman caught and passed him on Exhibition straight only for Davey to take over again at the chicane. It was all down to a drag to the flag and the Welshman took a sensational and very popular victory with Davey a popular overall winner. |

| Scottish Championship racer Lance Gauld took a race win on his way to overall victory today (Saturday 25th) at Donington Park The Winter Weekend saw 22 cars take to the grid with Gauld, fresh from two race wins at Knockhill last weekend, setting the fastest time in the morning's practice session. Daren Hills led the first race in the early stages but was eventually passed by Gauld and Gerard McCosh who finished in that order. Gauld looked like making it two in a row in the second heat and led all the way until the last lap when he and Ian Sturt slid off on oil from Steve Johnson's car. Dan Heron had been running in second place and was challenging for the lead. Luckily for Heron there was no oil on the inside line and he made it through to take his first ever race win with Daren Hills in second. The final saw a superb three car dice between Lawrence Davey, Gary Thomas and Sturt. Ultimately it was Thomas who got through with Davey holding off Sturt for second. |

| The 2003 Legends Winter Weekend is fast approaching... |
| The Corgi Legends Cars will contest a Winter Weekend at Donington Park on Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th October. The fourth annual Winter weekend for the pocket rockets will again lean towards a no pressure 'fun' weekend. "We'll present trophies on each day," comments Legends boss Phil Cooper. "There will not be a title as such up for grabs. We find this promotes a more relaxed paddock and it's a nice way to bring our racing year to a close." The Legends Winter Weekends traditionally attract a healthy mix of regulars from both the National and Scottish championships plus newcomers either keen to try their hand at the class or get in some early practice for the 2004 campaign. "Many of the top drivers are shipping cars over to the USA for the World Finals early in November so it's a very good opportunity for new names to take their place on the grid," added Cooper. The BARC run event will feature three races on each day run in the established Legends format of two reversed grid heats plus a final. Entries for the two days (six races in total plus a practice session beforehand) are available at just £275.00. Drivers can contest either or both of the two days with the usual Legends Cars options available to hire or share cars for the weekend. Extra hire cars will be available for the weekend as some of the regulars step aside for the weekend to make way for newcomers. Further information can be obtained from Phil Cooper on 01483 457133. |

| Looking good for a showdown at the final round |
LEGENDS DECIDER AT MALLORY PARK ON SUNDAY 28th The fabulous spectacle of the Corgi Legends Championship will be the highlight of a busy nine-race programme at Mallory Park on Sunday September 28th as the British Automobile Racing Club organises the racing at the Leicestershire track. The Legends series has become one of the most spectacular forms of racing in the UK and is renowned for frenetic action in short, sharp races. The start line-up for the two heats is decided by ballot and then the most successful drivers from the heats start at the back for the final, so overtaking ability is essential for success in the category. The Legends are five-eighths scale racing saloon cars, based on 1930s American Ford and Chevrolet sedans and are powered by 1200cc Yamaha engines. The result is some of the most exciting racing in Britain and the added bonus for fans at Mallory is that this will be the final round of the 2003 championship. Each Legends event features three races, with two eight-lap heats followed by a 10-lap final and with the faster cars often starting in the middle or towards the back of the grid, the results are usually in doubt until the flag falls. Two drivers stand out at the head of the championship battle and there is little to choose between them as they arrive at Mallory. What is certain is that by the end of the afternoon, either John Higgins or Steve Hobday will be crowned 2003 Corgi Legends champion and there is sure to be plenty of drama as the season-long title battle is resolved. Either would make a worthy champion, as both have raced superbly this season in a campaign that has included races at several rounds of the British Touring Car Championship. But while Higgins and Hobday fight for the title, a gaggle of other drivers are more than capable of winning races. Peter Morton, Oli Poyser, Robin Drysdale and Daventry-based brothers Mark and Stephen Treherne are just some of the other leading contenders while local hopes rest with Neil Willetts (Coleshill) and Neil Tressler (Bulkington). As well as the Legends, Sunday’s meeting features two races for the Primrose Engineering Mono Championship which will bring out two of the most varied grids in national single-seater racing, a round of the Peter Best Insurance MGCC BCV8 Championship for MGBs in all stages of modification and the action filled Caterham Academy races, in the series designed for newcomers to the sport and with 25 novices in identical cars, each race should be full of exciting racing. Racing starts at 1.15pm with qualifying from 9.30am. Adult admission is £10, with no charge for accompanied children (under16), paddock transfer or parking. Mallory Park is just off the A47 at Kirkby Mallory, Leicestershire. Further details from 01455 842931or www.mallorypark.co.uk FURTHER DETAILS FROM 01455 842931 or info@mallorypark.co.uk |

The penultimate round of the Corgi Legends Cars Championship takes place at Rockingham Motor Speedway (Corby, Northants), on 20th and 21st September. The championship is still far too close to call. John Higgins reclaimed the top spot from Steve Hobday at the previous round at Donington Park, but with just the ROckingham and Mallory Park rounds to go, the slightest slip from either driver will almost certainly hand the other the title.
