The
MSA Go Racing Pack
This is
the first part of the process of obtaining a racing licence.
It contains an MSA competitor's Yearbook (the 'Blue Book'),
an introductory video and the necessary application forms
to start you on the way to obtaining your licence.
Order
your Go Racing pack from the Motorsports Association. As of
January 2004 this costs £46. This link should take you directly
to the correct page on the MSA site.
The
Medical and the ARDS Test
To go
circuit racing you will need a racing licence, which is issued
by the Royal Automobile Club Motor Sports Association (MSA).
To qualify for a licence you must complete an 'ARDS' (Association
of Racing Drivers Schools) course. Most major circuit run
these courses. Before you attend your test you need to obtain
a medical certificate (over 18's only). Your GP can normally
do this - you are liable for the cost. The certificate form
is included in your 'Go Racing' pack.
There
are two parts to the course - a written test and a track driving
test. The written test is could cover any aspect of the 'blue
book' which you receive as part of your MSA 'Go Racing' pack,
but will almost certainly include sections on flag signals
and safety issues. The driving test is to prove to the instructor
who will be sitting alongside you that you can drive safely
on a racing circuit.
Once
you have successfully completed an ARDS test you may then
apply for an MSA competition licence.
Racing
Licence and Club Memberships
Once
you have passed your ARDS test you can apply for your MSA
competition licence. You will receive a National 'B' licence,
the lowest grade permitted for circuit racing in the UK. This
permits you to race in any event which specifies National
'B' as the minimum licence (including Legends).
You will
need to join the club which organises your championship -
either the British Automobile Racing Club (BARC) or the Scottish
Motor Racing Club (SMRC), depending on which Legends series
you will be racing in.
Finally,
you will need to pay a membership fee to INEX, the worldwide
sanctioning body for Legends Cars.
All licences
and memberships are renewable annually (examples at June 2001:
National 'B' - £38, BARC - around £90, INEX - around £75).
